IT Help Desk

What should an IT help desk actually do?

Practical support should solve problems and reduce repeat problems.

A help desk is the first point of contact when users have technology problems. It should give users a clear way to report issues, track what is happening and get a useful resolution.

1. Capture the problem properly

Record the user, device, application, symptoms, time and business impact. Good information makes troubleshooting faster.

2. Prioritise by impact

A problem affecting one user is not always as urgent as an outage affecting an entire team. Use simple priority levels.

3. Troubleshoot systematically

Start with the basics, reproduce the issue when possible, check recent changes and document what was tested.

4. Close the loop

Users should know what was fixed and, when appropriate, what they can do to avoid the issue in future.
